                                   RTSMAKER

RTSMaker is a program that will allow you to make your own custom RTS files
for use with Rise of the Triad's RemoteRidicule feature in Comm-Bat mode. An
RTS file is a file that ROTT uses during Comm-Bat play when one of your
opponents (or you) presses a function key to play a sound on everyone's
computer. The default one from Apogee contains such phrases as "You Got Me!",
and "Behind Ya!". With RTSMaker, you can change these to be whatever you want
them to be.

In order to create your own RTS files, you will need to have these files:

1) RTSMAKER.EXE
2) A script file created by you
3) 10 VOC files

The rules for the VOC files to be imported are:

1) They have to be 8 bit mono with no compression. If you use voc files that
are anything other than 8 bit mono, and no compression, they will be
imported into the RTS file, but when you attempt to play them, they will be
   ignored.

2) The Khz range for the voc can be anywhere from 7Khz to 44Khz. We recommend
that you use 11Khz as the recorded speed. This will provide the most
   optimal output.

3) We recommend that the length of the voc file be no longer than 9-10 seconds.
The reason for this is that if you try to use/play really long sounds, you
may crash the game. ROTT needs to load the sound to be played into memory,
and if you try to load a really large sound into memory, you may run out of
memory; hence we recommend sound files no longer than 9-10 seconds that are
recorded at 11Khz. You can experiment to see what will and will not crash
your system, but please be aware of this limitation when creating your own
   RTS files.

4) You must have 10 VOC files to build an RTS file. If you have less than
this, the file will not be built.

If you are going to pass around RTS files to your friends, it would be best to
create them with these above rules in mind, it may crash your friend's
computer if they try to use an RTS file that overloads their memory.

To RUN RTSMAKER, you need to create a script file to use with the program. A
sample script file is included in the RTSMAKER directory. Please see that
sample for an example of how to format your script file for use.

Once you create the script, you just need to enter this as the command to run
RTSMAKER and create the RTS file:

RTSMAKER <name of script file>

In other words, if your script name was mysound.txt, you would need to type in
"RTSMAKER mysound.txt" to run the program. You can then move the resulting RTS
file into your ROTT directory. To use this new sound file in the game, run the
SETUP.EXE program and choose USE MODIFIED STUFF to select the CHOOSE REMOTE
PLAYER SOUNDS option. Once there, choose the RTS file you would like to use in
the current game. This will apply only to your local computer. If you and a
friend both wanted to use a custom RTS file, you would both need to select it
via each's setup program. Please note that you will need to select this custom
file each time you run the game, as ROTT will not remember this custom file.

If you get any errors during the creation of the RTS file, check your script.
Errors during RTS creation are almost always attributed to having a bad script
file. Please examine the sample.txt script in the RTSMAKER subdirectory for an
example of the proper script format. If you are using a custom RTS sound
file, and do not get any sound playback, it is most likely due to the input VOC
file not meeting the above conditions. Please check the VOC files, and rebuild
the RTS file.

Join the Apogee mailing list! The Apogee mailing list is a list where we send
press releases, general Apogee info, new game release notifications, and other
miscellaneous items out on. Drop us a line at one of the above Internet
addresses, and we'll put you on. Just say the word! The Apogee Mailing list
is not a robot program, so please don't send automated commands.

Apogee also has a "finger" plan set up for the most up to date online
information about Apogee Software. Finger "apogee@fohnix.metronet.com" for
the most up to the second info about our releases! If you are unsure if you
can do this, or don't know what "finger" access is, please check with your
local Internet service provider for more information on this Internet service.

Apogee has an official FTP site for our shareware episodes. The latest stuff
is always available for anonymous FTP by ftp'ing to "ftp.uml.edu" in the

There are several BBS networks that are monitored for Apogee messages. Our
Online Support Representative monitors all of the following BBS networks.

Fidonet, Relaynet (Rime), Intelec, Ilink, U'NI-Net, & Smartnet.
All of these BBS networks have Games, Shareware, and Apogee conferences.
